The core idea of the NFT system is continuous circulation of the nutrient solution. Here’s how it works:

Nutrient solution is stored in a reservoir.
A submersible pump moves the solution from the reservoir into one end of the growing channels.
The solution flows as a thin film over the plant roots inside these channels.
The leftover solution drains back into the reservoir, where it is re-circulated.

The system uses gravity to move the water through the channels, so the channels must be installed at a slight angle (typically 1–3% slope).

Components of a NFT System

Growing Channels or Pipes: Usually made of PVC or food-grade plastic, where the plants are placed in holes along the top.
Net Pots or Holders: Hold the plants and allow roots to hang into the nutrient stream.
Reservoir: A container that holds the water and nutrient mix.
Water Pump: Circulates the solution from the reservoir to the grow channels.
Return System: Allows nutrient water to flow back to the reservoir by gravity.
Air Pump (optional): To increase oxygen levels in the reservoir.
Nutrient Solution: Water enriched with essential minerals like nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc.

Water-Efficient: Since the water is reused, NFT systems conserve water compared to traditional farming.
Low Maintenance: Minimal growing medium is required, making cleaning and upkeep easier.
Highly Oxygenated: Roots are well-aerated because they are partially exposed to air.
Ideal for Indoor and Vertical Farming: Compact, lightweight, and easy to scale up.
Fast Growth: Plants get direct access to nutrients, leading to faster development and better yields.
